Renowned Designer, Artist and Curator. Over the past 40 years, Freeman’s contribution to the design sector and Hong Kong’s society is widely recognised, achieving over 300 international art and design awards. In 1992, Lau was received Champion of Sculpture Section, Philippe Charriol’s Modern Art Competition. In 1994 & 1998, He was received Urban Council Fine Arts Awards and was received Mid-American Art Alliance Awards in 1997. In 2021, he was named “DFA World’s Outstanding Chinese Designer“.
As an artist, Lau has created a wide spectrum of artworks, including sculptures,
installations, public arts and even art products. Apart from his highly reputed
“Chairplay” series which has been collected by museums all over the world, in recent years, he has also been working on bamboo installations including “Sui Sui Ping An” – a gigantic bamboo lantern installation shown in San Francisco in 2017, as well as the “Bamboo Fortune Cookies” shown in Hong Kong Heritage Museum in 2015 and Suzhouin 2016.
As a curator, Lau co-curated the “By the People: Creative Chinese Characters”
exhibition at the Hong Kong Museum of Art in 2022. In 2024, he curated the “Loong Legacies” exhibition at the Hong Kong Central Library and “Design Pulse Asia” at DX design hub (Hong Kong Design Centre).
